Instead, you want to target long-tail keywords that are more specific and less competitive. These are keywords that have three or more words and describe a niche or a problem.
For example, you could target “best mens sneakers for walking” or “mens sneakers size 13”. These keywords have less search volume but also less competition. They also indicate a clear intent and need from the searcher.

On the other hand, if you search for “best mens sneakers”, you’ll see that most of the results are e-commerce category pages with listicles and comparisons. This means that users are looking for product recommendations and reviews based on different criteria.
You need to create a page that matches the content type, format, and angle of the top-ranking pages for your keyword. If you try to force an irrelevant page to rank, you’ll be fighting a losing battle.

Having content that broadly aligns with search intent isn’t enough. It also needs to cover everything searchers want to know or expect to see.
For example, if you’re writing a blog post on how to rank on page 1 of Google, you need to cover topics like keyword research, on-page SEO, off-page SEO, technical SEO, content marketing, etc.
If you’re creating a product page for mens sneakers, you need to include features like size filter, color options, price range, customer reviews, etc.
To make sure your page covers the topic in full, you can use tools like Ahrefs or Frase to analyze the top-ranking pages for your keyword and see what subtopics they cover. You can also use Google’s related searches and people also ask sections to find more ideas.
You don’t have to copy everything from the top-ranking pages, but you should aim to create content that is at least as good as or better than them. You should also add your own unique value proposition and voice to stand out from the crowd.
- Optimize your page for SEO
Once you have created your content, you need to optimize it for SEO. This means making sure your page follows Google’s ranking factors and best practices.
Some of the most important factors are:
• Page title: This is the clickable headline that appears in the search results. It should include your target keyword and a compelling reason to click.
• Meta description: This is the snippet of text that appears below the page title. It should summarize the main benefit or value of your page and include a call to action.
• URL: This is the web address of your page. It should be short, descriptive, and include your target keyword.
• Headings: These are the subheadings that divide your content into sections. They should use relevant keywords and make your content easy to scan and read.
